Write a note on the role of cooperatives in providing food and related items.
Role of Cooperatives in Food Security
Cooperatives are playing a vital role in ensuring food security in India, especially in the southern and western parts of the country. Their contribution can be summarized as follows:
Setting up Fair Price Shops: Cooperatives set up shops to sell essential goods at controlled and lower prices to the poor. For example, in Tamil Nadu, nearly 94% of fair price shops are being run by cooperatives.
Controlled Prices for Dairy and Vegetables: In Delhi, Mother Dairy has been instrumental in providing milk and vegetables to consumers at controlled rates decided by the Government of Delhi.
Success in Milk Production:Amul, a cooperative from Gujarat, has brought about the White Revolution in India by providing milk and milk products at reasonable prices and ensuring a fair income for dairy farmers.
Grain Banks: In Maharashtra, the Academy of Development Science (ADS) has facilitated a network of NGOs to set up grain banks in different regions. These banks provide food security by lending food grains to members of the community during lean seasons.
Training and Capacity Building: ADS also organizes training and capacity-building programs on food security for NGOs, helping to spread the model of grain banks to other parts of the country.
Alternative to Private Traders: By providing essential commodities at subsidized rates, cooperatives reduce the dependence of the poor on private traders who might charge higher prices.
