Which are the people more prone to food insecurity?
The people most prone to food insecurity in India are:
In Rural Areas: Landless people with little or no land to depend upon, traditional artisans, providers of petty services, petty self-employed workers, and the destitute including beggars.
In Urban Areas: Families whose working members are employed in ill-paid occupations and the casual labour market. These people are mostly engaged in seasonal activities and have very low wages.
Social Groups: People belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and some sections of the OBCs (Other Backward Classes) who have either poor land-base or very low land productivity.
Victims of Natural Disasters: People who are forced to migrate to other areas in search of work due to natural calamities like drought, floods, or earthquakes.
Women and Children: A high incidence of food insecurity prevails among pregnant and nursing mothers, and children under the age of 5 years.
Regional Concentration: People living in economically backward states with high incidence of poverty, tribal and remote areas, and regions more prone to natural disasters (such as parts of Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh).
