Question

What has our government done to provide food security to the poor? Discuss any two schemes launched by the government?

Answer

The government has ensured food security through a system of Buffer Stock (procuring food via FCI) and the Public Distribution System (PDS) (distributing food via ration shops).

Two important schemes launched by the government are:

  1. Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY):

    • Launched in December 2000 for the "poorest of the poor."

    • Under this scheme, 35 kg of food grains are provided to each eligible family at a highly subsidized rate (Wheat at ₹2 per kg and Rice at ₹3 per kg).

    • It covers about 2 crore poorest families among the BPL category.

  2. National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013:

    • This act provides a legal right to food to the poor.

    • It covers 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population.

    • Eligible households are entitled to receive 5 kg of food grains per person per month at subsidized prices of ₹3/2/1 per kg for rice/wheat/coarse grains.
