What is genetic manipulation? How is it useful in agricultural practices?
Genetic Manipulation:
It is a process of incorporating desirable characters into a crop variety by hybridisation or by introducing a gene that provides the desired characteristic. This results in Genetically Modified Crops (GM crops).
Usefulness in Agricultural Practices:
Higher Yield: It helps in increasing the productivity of the crop per acre.
Improved Quality: It improves quality traits like protein in pulses, oil in oilseeds, or preserving quality in fruits.
Biotic and Abiotic Resistance: It makes crops resistant to insects, diseases (biotic), and environmental stresses like drought, salinity, and heat (abiotic).
Wider Adaptability: It allows crops to be grown in diverse climatic conditions.
