Identify the social and economic groups which are most vulnerable to poverty in India.
The social and economic groups most vulnerable to poverty in India are:
1. Social Groups:
Scheduled Tribes (ST): This group has the highest percentage of poverty in India (about 43%).
Scheduled Castes (SC): A significant percentage of this group remains below the poverty line due to social exclusion and lack of land ownership.
2. Economic Groups:
Rural Agricultural Labour Households: Families that do not own land and depend on manual labour in fields are highly vulnerable.
Urban Casual Labour Households: People working as daily wage earners in the informal sector in cities (like construction workers or rickshaw pullers) face high poverty levels due to irregular income.
3. Vulnerable Groups within Families:
Apart from these social and economic groups, there is also inequality of incomes within a family. Women, elderly people, and female infants are considered the "poorest of the poor" because they are often denied equal access to the family's available resources.
