Describe global poverty trends. - Economics

Question

Describe global poverty trends.

Answer

Global poverty trends show an overall decline, but with significant regional variations. The following points describe the trends:

  1. General Decline: According to the World Bank, the proportion of people living in extreme poverty (living on less than $2.15 a day) has fallen from 36% in 1990 to less than 10% in recent years.

  2. Greatest Success (China and Southeast Asia): Poverty has declined the most in China and Southeast Asian countries due to rapid economic growth and massive investments in human resource development. The number of poor in China has dropped dramatically.

  3. Sub-Saharan Africa: In this region, poverty has seen a very slow decline. In fact, due to high population growth, the absolute number of poor people increased for a period, though the percentage has started to drop recently.

  4. South Asia (India, Pakistan, etc.): This region has also seen a significant decline in the percentage of poor people, but it still hosts a large portion of the world's poor.

  5. Latin America: In Latin America and the Caribbean, the poverty ratio has stayed relatively stable, with no sharp decline as seen in East Asia.

  6. Poverty in Former Socialist Countries: Countries like Russia, where poverty was officially non-existent earlier, saw an emergence and increase in poverty after the collapse of the socialist system.

  7. SDG Goal: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) aim to eradicate all forms of extreme poverty by the year 2030.
