Make two lists: one with the main events and the effects of the February Revolution and the other with the main events and effects of the October Revolution. Write a paragraph on who was involved in each, who were the leaders and what was the impact of each on Soviet history.
1. The February Revolution
Main Events:
22 February: A lockout took place at a factory on the right bank of the Neva river.
23 February: Workers in 50 factories called a strike in sympathy. Women led the way to strikes.
25 February: The government suspended the Duma.
27 February: Police headquarters were ransacked. Soldiers mutinied and joined the striking workers to form the "Petrograd Soviet."
2 March: The Tsar abdicated on the advice of military commanders.
Effects:
It brought down the monarchy (Autocracy) in Russia.
A Provisional Government was formed to run the country.
Restrictions on public meetings and associations were removed.
The February Revolution involved the factory workers and the soldiers of the Petrograd garrison. It was largely a spontaneous mass movement without specific political party leadership at the forefront, though liberal politicians and Soviet leaders stepped in to form the government. The main impact was the end of the Romanov dynasty and the establishment of the Provisional Government.
2. The October Revolution
Main Events:
16 October: Lenin persuaded the Petrograd Soviet and the Bolshevik Party to agree to a socialist seizure of power. A Military Revolutionary Committee was appointed under Leon Trotsky.
24 October: The uprising began. The Prime Minister left the city to summon troops.
24-25 October: The Military Revolutionary Committee seized government offices, arrested ministers, and the ship Aurora shelled the Winter Palace.
By Nightfall: The city was under the committee's control and the ministers had surrendered.
Effects:
The Provisional Government was overthrown.
The Bolsheviks took control of the power.
It laid the foundation for a communist state in Russia.
The October Revolution was led by the Bolsheviks, headed by Vladimir Lenin, along with the Military Revolutionary Committee organized by Leon Trotsky. The participants included pro-Bolshevik soldiers, sailors, and the Red Guards. The main impact was that Russia became the first socialist state in the world. Banks and industries were nationalized, and Russia eventually withdrew from World War I.
