Question

In what ways did the Nazi state seek to establish total control over its people ?

Answer

The Nazi state sought to establish total control over its people in the following ways:

  1. The Enabling Act (1933): This Act established a dictatorship. It gave Hitler all powers to sideline Parliament and rule by decree. All political parties and trade unions were banned except for the Nazi Party.

  2. Special Surveillance Forces: Apart from the regular police, special security forces like the Gestapo (secret state police), the SS (protection squads), and the SD were created. They were given extra-constitutional powers to detain people in torture chambers and concentration camps without legal procedures.

  3. Control over Media: The regime established complete control over the media, radio, cinema, and the press to spread Nazi propaganda and censor any opposition.

  4. Control over Education and Youth: Schools were "cleansed" and textbooks were rewritten to justify Nazi racial ideas. Youth organizations like the Hitler Youth were made compulsory to indoctrinate children with total loyalty to Hitler.

  5. Employment of Terror: The state used fear to control the population. People could be arrested and sent to concentration camps at will, creating a state of fear where no one dared to speak against the regime.
