Describe the problems faced by the Weimar Republic.
The problems faced by the Weimar Republic were:
Harsh Treaty of Versailles: The Republic was forced to accept the humiliating Treaty of Versailles, which held Germany responsible for the war, imposed heavy reparations (£6 billion), and took away its overseas colonies and resources.
Unpopularity: Many Germans held the Weimar Republic responsible not only for the defeat in the war but also for the disgrace and humiliation at Versailles.
Economic Crisis (Hyperinflation): In 1923, Germany refused to pay reparations, leading France to occupy the Ruhr industrial area. Germany printed paper currency recklessly, causing the value of the German Mark to collapse and prices to skyrocket (Hyperinflation).
Political Instability: The Weimar Constitution had defects like Proportional Representation (making it hard for one party to get a majority) and Article 48, which gave the President powers to impose emergency, suspend civil rights, and rule by decree. This led to frequent changes in cabinets.
Great Depression: The economic crisis of 1929 hit Germany hard. Banks collapsed, factories closed, and unemployment rose to 6 million, weakening faith in the democratic system.
