Write short notes on the following.
(i) The Indian Desert
(ii) The Central Highlands
(iii) The Island groups of India
(i) The Indian Desert
Location: It lies towards the western margins of the Aravali Hills.
Landscape: It is an undulating sandy plain covered with sand dunes, especially barchans (crescent-shaped dunes).
Climate: The region receives very low rainfall (below 150 mm per year) and has an arid climate with low vegetation cover.
Rivers: Luni is the only large river in this region. Streams appear during the rainy season but soon disappear into the sand.
(ii) The Central Highlands
Location: This is the part of the Peninsular Plateau lying to the north of the Narmada River, covering a major area of the Malwa Plateau.
Boundaries: It is bounded by the Vindhyan range on the south and the Aravalis on the northwest.
Drainage: The rivers flowing in this region (Chambal, Sind, Betwa, and Ken) move from southwest to northeast, indicating the slope.
Extension: The eastward extensions are locally known as Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand. The Chotanagpur plateau marks the further eastward extension, drained by the Damodar river.
(iii) The Island groups of India
Lakshadweep Islands: Located in the Arabian Sea close to the Malabar coast of Kerala. They are of coral origin and cover a small area of 32 sq km. Kavaratti island is the administrative headquarters.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands: An elongated chain of islands located in the Bay of Bengal. They are bigger in size and more numerous. They are believed to be an elevated portion of submarine mountains.
Significance: Both groups have great strategic importance for the country and possess a great diversity of flora and fauna.
