Why does the rainfall decrease from the east to the west in Northern India.
Rainfall decreases from the east to the west in Northern India due to the following reasons:
Loss of Moisture: The Bay of Bengal branch of the South-West monsoon moves from the east towards the west along the Ganga plains. As these winds travel inland, they progressively lose their moisture content.
Distance from the Sea: As the winds move further away from the sea (the source of moisture), the amount of rainfall they bring naturally reduces.
Topography: By the time the winds reach the western parts like Punjab and Rajasthan, they have very little moisture left, resulting in less rainfall.
