Why do the courtiers call the prince ‘the Happy Prince&r... - Moments Supplementary Reader

Question

Why do the courtiers call the prince ‘the Happy Prince’? Is he really happy? What does he see all around him?

Answer

The courtiers called the prince ‘the Happy Prince’ because when he was alive, he lived in a palace where sorrow was not allowed to enter. He lived a life of luxury and remained happy throughout his life.

However, he is not really happy now. After being placed as a statue on a high column, he can see the reality of his city.

He sees all the ugliness and misery of his city. He sees the poverty, hunger, and suffering of the poor people, which makes his heart ache and causes him to weep.
