Write a response to the following arguments against democracy:... - Democratic Politics
Write a response to the following arguments against democracy:
a Army is the most disciplined and corruption-free organisation in the country. Therefore army should rule the country.
b Rule of the majority means the rule of ignorant people. What we need is the rule of the wise, even if they are in small numbers.
c If we want religious leaders to guide us in spiritual matters, why not invite them to guide us in politics as well. The country should be ruled by religious leaders.
(a)
The army is trained for the defense of the country, not for governing it. Army rule is undemocratic because military leaders are not elected by the people and cannot be held accountable. History shows that military regimes often become oppressive and ignore the needs of common citizens.
(b)
Every individual has the right to have a say in their own future, regardless of their level of education. Who would decide who is "wise"? A small group of "wise" people might only look after their own interests. Democracy is better because it ensures representation for all sections of society and allows for public discussion to correct mistakes.
(c)
Religion and politics serve different purposes. Spiritual matters are personal, while politics deals with public welfare, the economy, and law. Mixing the two can lead to conflict and discrimination against those who follow different religions or those who do not follow any. A democratic country needs leaders who are accountable to all citizens, not just a specific religious group.
