Question
What is loudness of sound? What factors does it depend on?
Answer
Loudness is the characteristic of sound that enables us to distinguish between a loud sound and a faint sound. It is a measure of the sound energy reaching the ear per second.
Factors it depends on:
Amplitude of vibration: Loudness is proportional to the square of the amplitude. Higher amplitude means louder sound.
Sensitivity of the ear: It also depends on how sensitive the listener's ears are to that sound.
