Question

How will you find the valency of chlorine, sulphur and magnesium?

Answer

Valency is determined by the number of electrons in the outermost shell (valence electrons).

1. Magnesium:

  • Atomic number = 12

  • Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 2

  • Since it has 2 electrons in the outermost shell, Valency = 2.

2. Sulphur:

  • Atomic number = 16

  • Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 6

  • Since it has 6 electrons in the outermost shell (more than 4), it gains electrons.

  • Valency = 8 – 6 = 2.

3. Chlorine:

  • Atomic number = 17

  • Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 7

  • Since it has 7 electrons in the outermost shell (more than 4), it gains electrons.

  • Valency = 8 – 7 = 1.
