Question
How will you find the valency of chlorine, sulphur and magnesium?
Answer
Valency is determined by the number of electrons in the outermost shell (valence electrons).
1. Magnesium:
Atomic number = 12
Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 2
Since it has 2 electrons in the outermost shell, Valency = 2.
2. Sulphur:
Atomic number = 16
Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 6
Since it has 6 electrons in the outermost shell (more than 4), it gains electrons.
Valency = 8 – 6 = 2.
3. Chlorine:
Atomic number = 17
Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 7
Since it has 7 electrons in the outermost shell (more than 4), it gains electrons.
Valency = 8 – 7 = 1.
