Question

Two children are at opposite ends of an aluminium rod. One strikes the end of the rod with a stone. Find the ratio of times taken by the sound wave in air and in aluminium to reach the second child.

Answer

Given:

  • Speed of sound in air (v_1) = 346 \text{ m/s}

  • Speed of sound in aluminium (v_2) = 6420 \text{ m/s}

  • Let the length of the rod be d.

Formula:

\text{Time} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}}
\text{Ratio} = \frac{\text{Time in Air}}{\text{Time in Aluminium}} = \frac{d / v_1}{d / v_2} = \frac{v_2}{v_1}

Calculation:

\text{Ratio} = \frac{6420}{346}
\text{Ratio} \approx 18.55

Answer:
The ratio of times taken by the sound wave in air and in aluminium is 18.55 : 1.
