The sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat in the west but the watches show the same time. How does this happen?

Answer

There is a time lag of two hours between Arunachal Pradesh and Gujarat because of the longitudinal extent of India (about 30°). Since the sun takes 4 minutes to cross 1° of longitude, the difference comes to 120 minutes (2 hours).

The watches show the same time because:

  1. The time along the Standard Meridian of India (82° 30' E) passing through Mirzapur (in Uttar Pradesh) is taken as the standard time for the whole country.

  2. This is known as the Indian Standard Time (IST), which ensures uniformity of time across all states regardless of their longitudinal position.
