Question
How do substances like CO₂ and water move in and out of the cell? Discuss.
Answer
1. Movement of CO₂ (Diffusion):
Substances like CO₂ move in and out of the cell by a process called diffusion. When the concentration of CO₂ is high inside the cell (as cellular waste) and low outside, it moves from the region of higher concentration to the region of lower concentration across the cell membrane.
2. Movement of Water (Osmosis):
Water moves in and out of the cell by a process called osmosis. It is the passage of water molecules from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
