How has Prashant, a teenager, been able to help the people of his village?
Prashant, despite being a teenager, helped his village by taking the lead in a time of crisis. His efforts included:
Organizing Help: He organized a group of youths and elders to pressure the local merchant to give rice for the starving people in the shelter.
Health and Hygiene: He formed a team of volunteers to clean the shelter of filth, urine, and animal carcasses, and to tend to the wounds and fractures of the injured.
Attracting Relief: He made children lie on the sand with empty utensils on their stomachs to signal their hunger to the passing relief helicopters. This resulted in the helicopters dropping regular food supplies.
Social Rehabilitation: He organized cricket matches for orphaned children to distract them from their grief. He also persuaded women to work in the ‘food-for-work’ program started by an NGO.
Foster Care: He resisted the plan to set up separate institutions for orphans and widows, instead helping to resettle them in foster families within their own community.
