Explain the following giving examples.
(a) Saturated solution
(b) Pure substance
(c) Colloid
(d) Suspension
(a) Saturated solution:
At any particular temperature, a solution that has dissolved as much solute as it is capable of dissolving is said to be a saturated solution. In other words, when no more solute can be dissolved in a solution at a given temperature, it is called a saturated solution.
Example: If you keep adding salt to water and stirring, a point comes when no more salt dissolves and it settles at the bottom. The liquid above is a saturated solution.
(b) Pure substance:
A pure substance is a substance that consists of only a single type of particles (atoms or molecules). All the constituent particles of a pure substance are the same in their chemical nature.
Example: Gold, Iron, Water, Sugar.
(c) Colloid:
A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture where the particle size is intermediate between a true solution and a suspension. The particles are too small to be seen by the naked eye but are big enough to scatter a beam of light passing through it (Tyndall effect).
Example: Milk, Fog, Clouds, Smoke.
(d) Suspension:
A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture containing solid particles that do not dissolve but remain suspended throughout the bulk of the medium. The particles of a suspension are visible to the naked eye and settle down when left undisturbed.
Example: Muddy water, Mixture of chalk powder and water, Sand in water.
